SIGHTSEEINGS:
THE PILE-DWELLINGS: the rests of Ledro-pile were discovered, after thousands
years, in autumn 1929, when Ledro Lake level was shorter because of the work
fort the idro-electic central in riva del Garda. On the south-side
of the Ledro-Lake were found over 10.00 piles, that declared one of the most
important pre-historical site in Italy and in Europe.
THE PILE MUSEUM in Molina di Ledro: is situated on the east side of the Lake, in
molina di Ledro.
“BIOTOPE” OF LAKE AMPOLA: The lake Ampola is situated in the south-western part
of Trentino in the homonymous valley, which is a continuation of the Ledro one.
The mountains that surround Lake Ampola are formed by sediment rocks. The lake
is located 725 m above the sea-level, it has an oblong shape following the Ledro
axis and it is 400 m long and 150 m wide; the maximal depth is only 3-4 m. The
main affluent is the Ovri torrent, the effluent is the Palvico torrent, which
runs into the Chiese River.
SMITHIES AND HOBNAILS
When the iron-foundries had closed, just after 1866, everal craftsmen came to
the Ledro Valley, settled down in the old smithies and foundries and started a
new iron working, quite different from the one used in the past for the
production of hobnails. This new processing required much more skill and
specialisation. The inhabitants of Ledro had the chance to learn from the new
comers how to produce "brocche a zappa" (special hobnails in the form of a hoe =
zappa). The "hoe hobnails" working spread out specially in the lower part of the
valley: Prè and Molina became production centres and very soon problems arose
for the sale’s and workers’ organisation.
PHARMACY LAB – FOLETTO’S MUSEUM : Alembics Pestles Tools
In this museum are
displayed machines and equipment which are part of the Foletto pharmaceutical
laboratory’s history, from the beginning of the 20th century. The laboratory,
started and run next to the chemist’s shop, was a real pharmaceutical workshop,
albeit small in size, in its pioneer days. The Foletto pharmacists continue
however to produce with the same care and professionalism, as a hundred years
ago, many syrups and liqueurs and they are pleased to welcome you to this small
museum for a taste of past and present times, inspiring a longing and love for
true old time craftsmanship.
GARIBALDI AIN BEZZECA:
The Ledro Valley has always been a privileged communication way between Brescia
and the Northern part Garda. During peace time, the position of Ledro Valley was
very important for trade and commerce, but also during war time the armies could
make use of a safe and rapid way to cross Ponte Caffaro and Forte d'Ampola
passes.
The village of Bezzecca is situated on a pleasant plain in the middle of the
valley, at the entrance with the Val Concei. The Assat torrent runs trough the
village, dividing it in two parts.
The place is famous because it has been the theatre of the battles between the
Garibaldi followers and the Austrian Army during the Third Independence War of
Italy in 1866. During the First World War took place here long trench warfare
between the Italian artillery and the Hapsburg army. The mountains surrounding
the area have been the defensive line and are plenty of paths that cross the
fortified zone.
THE GARIBALDI MUSEUM: The small museum is situated in Bezzecca, along the Assat
torrent. It hosts an exposition of local history of the 19th-20th centuries
about the Ledro Valley and in particular about Garibaldi and the First World
War.
CHURCHES:
BEZZECA: church of
Santa Lucia in Pratis. This ancient little church was erected in the 15th
century probably for the cult and worship of both communities. It is an
aisleless building characterized by 3 Gothic spans. The small orange and
vermillion bell tower together with the whiteness of the walls produce a
peculiar and pleasant chromatic effect. The interior shows only a few fragments
of the frescoes and graffiti that must have decorated it a long time ago.
MOLINA: The earlier parish church of Molina, mentioned for the first time in
documents of 1500, was on the lake side, quite far away from the centre of the
village. In 1758 the population asked the Bishop of Trento for authorization to
erect a new, bigger and more central church. The present imposing Baroque church
was thus built according to the project by architect Pietro Bianchi and was
dedicated to St. Virgil, Patron saint of Molina and Trento. Unfortunately it was
seriously damaged during the wars in the 18th century and especially during WWI.
So it had to be restored in 1930 and 1983. The interior is decorated by fine and
sober stucco work and a beautiful marble high-altar. In the vault there are
majestic frescoes by Giorgio Tellie, which are very beautiful even if lacking
perspective. The church SS. Trinità in Legos is however very small and cosy. Its
features are late Gothic. Also St. Antonio church in Biacesa of the 16th century
is a nice small cosy church. It was enlarged and restored in 1904 with the
support of all the inhabitants. The oldest part remains the presbytery with its
painting depicting St. Antony.
TIARNO DI SOTTO: Sts Peter and Paul Church In this recently built latin cross
church (1939) we find parts of the previous church, which was probably erected
about 1650. The hexagonal dome-shaped presbyter, characterized by large windows
and whose style is completely different from the rest of the building, belong to
the old church and now is a sort of separated chapel leaning against the main
building. Remarkable works to be seen: the altar-piece with St. Peter on the
black altar; "Jesus Christ on the Cross with Maria Magdaleine" (high altar); "Jesus
Christ Baptism" and the "Virgin Mary with various saints".
TIARNO DI SOPRA: St. Bartolomeo Church. It is an aisleless church painted by
Agostino Aldi from Mantua (end 1800 - beginning 1900) and it preserves some
valuable, recently restored works. The present building was erected in 1860
according to the plan by architect Claricini, but documents confirm the
existence of a smaller rectangular church already in 1348, in the course of
centuries it was often enlarged and finally rebuilt. Of course it is the 72
metres high, stone bell-tower that first captures your attention, but it is most
of all the high altar piece that arouses admiration.
PIEVE DI LEDRO: church of Pieve di Ledro and its history. Referring to the
written documents we have, we found out that a collegiate church already existed
in 1235. Around 1650 the church was completely rebuilt in Renaissance style,
decorated with magnificent romanic stucco works and provided with a roman
bell-tower. During the Spanish War of Succession the church was gravely
plundered and spoilt. Unfortunately WWI was even more disastrous: almost all the
interior sacred decorations and altar pieces were destroyed. We can now admire
only three of the many paintings that used to be in the church: the Annunciation
(now on the high altar); the "Disputation of the Holy Sacrament" (first altar on
the left) and the "Ecce Homo" (second altar on the left). Also the wooden,
lovely painted choir loggia was preserved from the wars’ effects. A demanding
restoration work started in 1931 and restored to the church its primitive
beauty.
On MOUNT BRENO: the small "San Martino" church. You can reach it with a walk on
the mountain.
CONCEI: Churches and painter A.S. Fasal.
At the beginning of this century A. S. Fasal from Bolzano was asked to
redecorate the three churches of the Concei hamlets; in his frescoes and
graffiti he succeeded in expressing with a peculiar strength and simplicity the
deep religious sensitivity of that time.
His masterpieces are probably the triptychs in the presbytery of St. Martin
Bishop church in Locca. One fresco represents the "Sacred Redemption’s Drama"
and the other the "Sanctification through the work of the Church".The frescoes
in the churches of Enguiso and Lenzumo are of no less importance and interest.
We cannot forget the remarkable painting on the eighteenth century high-altar of
the church in Lenzumo that is a fine example of the Venetian painting school’s
technique.
